TGOC KIT LIST 2014 (What to leave out)

I really could do with getting my pack weight down to 26lb (inc)

But I am so struggling, what with the need for a start with 4 days food on board

The table is below with key, explaining what the tables show.

Any suggestions for what to leave out, gratefully pondered on.....

SO, how to lose another 4lb in pack weight?

That is carried pack weight.

Admittedly, this will fluctuate depending upon food eaten, water carried, and clothing worn or removed.

But it is may, and in recent years we have had all seasons.

SOME things cannot be omitted OK.

Jelly Babies, Whisky & Sloe Gin (MUST STAY)

And the Mini Speaker  (Bothy Parties!!)

Maybe the spare Music Phone and different cooking stuff will save weight.
That is about 250g (½ lb)

Yes, I could take a much lighter camera, BUT photographs are an integral part of my walking, and the camera will be on the belt loop not in the pack.

See how hard this is.

I would go with 28lb (but the BIG camera must stay) at a pinch.

SO, that means I need to lose a minimum of 2lb safely!!!

  1. My thoughts

Rucksack cover - Never use one, rely on dry bags
Sit Mat - Sit on Rucksack/waterproof
Windshirt or Wind Jacket, not both
Post spare gas to next pick up point. If Gas runs out, its not a killer
Only take e-lite. Light nights, early to bed
    Dump the optional section
Wrap wide and narrow tape onto an empty biro. Only carry a metre of each. I wrap this in cling film to save it picking up muck
Use a High Absorbancy J Cloth instead of towels and clothes. Simply wring out when in use. Dries quicker
Decant foot cream into a small nalgene bottle. Only take 30ml
Swap leatherman for mine classic Swiss Army Knife
    Speakers - headpones
Phone seems heavy. Turn off when not it use, turn off Wifi, one battery can last for days. Only take one spare and a charging cable to use at Hostels?
    Music on Phone?
Camera -ooh - get a smaller one

    Hope it helps?
    Robert

  2. Nail Scissors - Use Scissors on mini Swiss Army knife

  3. Do you need a torch? I Always use a rucksack cover. A wet rucksack can be a heavy one. Phone does seem heavy. Change 400 gram spikes for Yaktrax or don’t take any, i’m not taking any. Don’t carry 300gr of water. Scotland is full of the stuff, get it on the go, as required. Last but not least, lie about the weights, its all in the mind.

    1. Phone is big, and it does everything other than carry the bloody pack.
      Not taking spikes.
Optional was incase and also alternative Cooking stuff.
Might go with that instead of Jetboil.

Got to take camera, it is your old NX10 :-)

  4. All thoughts pondered on.
    Thanks Robert

I have had a heap of opinions on Twitter too.

Foot Cream is already decanted into pot as is foot talc
Now only taking the one torch.
GOT to have the music and the camera
Only taking one gas (others being picked up on route at parcel points)
Phone is heavy, but it does everything, phone, gps, kindle, music (so need a spare battery cos it will be used) just not as a phone
Speaker is not strictly necessary I guess, might well drop it and just have phone going.
J cloth is good idea, on the list.
    Windshirt is going defo
Nothing on optional goes unless I swap the cooking stuff over and take 250 gas + stove.
Tape is already off the roll, but I had issues with calf and this is physio tape.
In fact ALL tape is off the rolls.
Sit mat is soft and lovely, and I use it for kneeling in tent as well.
This is important, because I have a knee operation in June and should not kneel anyway.
Probably will drop the rucksack cover, since everything is in bags.
Actually the cover doesn't fit properly anyway.
Have one set of scissors and one on knife (always have a spare)

  5. I agree with most of Robert's suggestions, also I don't understand why you need a heavy tent AND a bivvi bag - surely you plan to camp! What is all the down stuff for - surely you can use the sleeping bag to keep warm? One large dry bag should be sufficient. Also just one spare pair of socks - you seem to have loads of them! Baseball hat isn't needed if you have a buff. Beanie and bootie camp covers can go, as well as some of your nappies and gloves. Carry your poles, so they aren't on your back. I agree with others, if you really want to carry less weight get a lighter camera and phone. I can't believe you plan to carry so many items - no wonder they weigh a ton! Having said that, if you want to carry them and can take the weight, there's no problem - it's up to you...

    1. Reckon bivi will go.
Down stuff is for camp when everything could be wet.
I cannot afford a lighter quality camera and I like taking photo's so the camer will stay. I have a camer that weighs 340g, but it just doesn't do the quality.
Poles are carried, they are NOT in the weight.
Will drop buff for baseball hat (for when it is HOT), beanie has to stay for when it is COLD.
2 pairs of pants (1 wearing 1 carried) is all I have, and I do need waterproof gloves and little windproof gloves.
I am going to go with socks. I like dry feet, and the minimum number is 2 + thin spare.
If I can get it down to just under 28 I will be happy.
Last year I carried 32lb + 32lb of belly I no longer have.

      Delete
  6. 'for camp when everything could be wet' - time for new waterproofs, perhaps?
I agree with the dry foot policy, but if you have decent footwear a maximum of two pairs of socks are needed - you could manage with one pair of x-socks as they can be washed and dry out overnight, plus a pair of liner socks.
Seeing as you've lost 32lb since last year, why are you worried - you could take a kitchen sink if you wanted - I was just making a few suggestions as requested, and I certainly haven't suggested anything I wouldn't be happy with. The key for me is a high quality waterproof, breathable shell, boots that don't leak, and a robust tent in which any condensation doesn't encroach into the inner. Plus lots of brew stops.
    Good luck!

  7. A couple of years back John Manning showed me a great system for dealing with the gubbins. Just make it a mirror of you daily life. So you've got the House (Tent), Bedroom (Sleeping bag, mat), Kitchen (stove, spork, scoff). Wardrobe . . . you get the idea. It works a treat. Specially if you have an Attic where all the stuff you've been carrying for years and never use languishes.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Hi Andy

I did a forensic comparison of your original list and mine. Our total weights were pretty similar but I was carrying a greater weight of food and spare clothes; you were taking more electronic gubbins, camera stuff etc. I am one of life's worriers so do have a tendency to stick stuff in "just in case". Like you I would rather be warm and dry in the evening and at night. Mr S who must be obeyed has told me not to take a silk sleeping bag liner so I have saved almost 200gr. Presumably you will not take the seal skinz socks if you take your boots instead of trail shoes. I may not bother even with the trail shoes, unless the weather forecast looks horrendous boots. Torches - I am just taking a Petzl e lite. Last year I took something heavier and didn't even switch it on. Having said that hope I will not have to bale out in the night...

You could cut down a bit on the jelly babies by biting their little heads off before you pack them.

See you next week. Bet my pack is heavier than yours!

    1. Won't be in the Lakes, I am taking a hefty tent.
But I now have my TGOC kit list down to 27.6lb
I reckon that is as low as it will get, because I like my gadgets and safety stuff, and I am not a UL nutter.
Anyway, after 2 days the food bit will be a lot lighter.
